Well, if someone shoots in HD, transfers it to film for a theatrical release, and it looks bad, the HD maker blames the film print.

If someone shoots in HD, transfers to film for theatrical release, and it looks great, then heck, shooting in HD will be an acceptable option.

It looks like film loses either way, but only because film has always been a helpful ally to all video formats. Film has such a sweetful soul it just can't help itself, even if it leads to its own demise.

    just as CD defeated vinyl

just as DV is defeating (S)Video8/(S)VHS

just as DVD is defeating VHS

HD will defeat Celluloid for mainstream use within 25 years IMO.

The only negative point against digital is that there is no negative or print for posterity, future generations and post-apocalyptic alien visitors -- but that's probably just as well. There'll be plenty of radio activity for them to get through first ...

I think it will be far less than 25 years.

Once the moneymen realise the audience doesn't know its arsehole from its elbow (as in they can't tell the difference in picture quality) they'll jump at the chance to save a **** load of money. I reckon they'll be the norm within 15 years...The camera's will be half the size they're now within 2-3 years - this will make a massive differance in take up.

Attack Of The Clones and Spy Kids 2 too looked brill on the big screen, imo.

Just to let you know CDs did not overthrow LPs. LPs are actually on the rebound. More and more new albums are coming out with an LP option. Plus, ask a real Audiophile and you will hear how much more real and true an LP will sound when compared to a CD.

    Good Luck

Or perhaps the lack of soul comes from the work on the project, not the format.

    Hey there.

    "real and true" WTF?

99% of all music is recorded digitaly now anyway so how can transfering that to an analog format be more "real and true" than a digital format such as a CD.

Rose tinted glasses my friend. "ask a real Audiophile" to have a listen to a DIGITAL audio DVD. Its sh*ts all over vinyl.

For the record (pun intended) CD did KILL vinyl. The small amount of vinyl is nothing in comparison of the amount of CDs sold world wide.

    Despin out.

    Question

Despin, if you had been paying attention then maybe you would have noticed that Miker said "just as CD defeated vinyl". "Defeated" is the key word here.

All me and Nigel meant was that this is far from true. In fact its complete bollox! Vinyl sales are going up and all commercial record companies have started to release albums on LP again. So how is vinyl defeated? Just go and have a look down at your local HMV, there is now more Vinyl in there than cassettes or minidiscs. Also you have to remember that Vinyl tends to be the norm for underground dance music and there isn't an official chart that can measure the amount of units sold.

Obviously CD is the future and will not be toppled for sometime yet (until audio DVD's take off) but vinyl is still here even though it doesn't represent the so called digital qualities that seem so important to most people.

    perhaps then i should add:

just as the allies defeated the nazis.

of course vinyl is still around, so are nazis. just in far smaller quantities (thank god).

of course i don't mean to imply than vinyl loving audiophiles are nazis !!!!

film will never die, but it will be defeated.

Nigel's made a very good point. Vinyl is making a heavy comeback with more turntables being sold now than ever before.
